Pregnancy and lactation, dramatic weight change and heredity can cause significant changes to a woman’s breasts. Many women consider breast lift surgery when their breasts become pendulous, lose firmness or have nipples and areolas that point below the breast crease. Some women opt for breast lift surgery with breast implants. In a breast lift surgery, also called a mastoplexy, the surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue to raise and reshape the breasts.
Since milk ducts and nipples remain intact after a breast lift surgery, many women choose to undergo it before having children. Breast lift surgery should not affect your ability to breast-feed. However, be sure to discuss your plans for breast-feeding when consulting with Dr. Kalus about breast lift surgery.
After a thorough examination and discussion, Dr. Kalus will recommend a lift type or combination procedure that is best suited for you.
In the periareolar mastoplexy, the surgeon makes an incision around the entire areola and relocates it to a higher position. This procedure gives the appearance of less scarring--because incisions on the edge of the areola are concealed—but achieves minimal skin tightening. It is an excellent choice for patients with limited breast sagging.
The short scar technique uses two incisions that resemble a lollipop: one around the areola and one vertically from the areola to the breast crease. The short scar technique eliminates the large transverse, or anchor-shaped, scar that results from traditional breast lifts leaving the patient with one less incision and a more aesthetic and lasting result.
The full mastopexy, commonly referred to as a traditional breast lift, is used primarily for large breasted women with severe to extreme sagging. It is the most invasive and complicated of all mastopexy procedures but can be combined with breast augmentation surgery to completely restructure the patient's chest.
This type of mastopexy combines breast lift with reduction or augmentation. In a procedure that combines breast reduction and breast lift, the emphasis is more on skin tightening rather than size change resulting in a more proportionate appearance. In mastopexy combining breast augmentation and breast lift, the surgeon adds breast implants, instead of removing excess skin, for a fuller more enhanced appearance. For some women, breast implants are an excellent complement to the breast lift procedure.
Typically an outpatient procedure, basic breast lift surgery takes about one to three hours. During surgery, Dr. Kalus will lift and reshape underlying breast tissue; reposition the nipple and areola; reduce enlarged areolas, if necessary; and remove excess breast skin.
After plastic surgery, you will wear a bandage or special bra to reduce swelling and support your breasts as you heal. Over the next few months, your breasts’ shape and position will gradually settle into place and incision lines will fade and improve.
